Well
drilling has been a part of our family for three generations. We
are a small drilling company in Bucks County, Pennsylvania that
was started by James Carson. It all began in 1925, James Carson
needed a well for his home in Ardsley, Montgomery County, PA.
He contacted a local drilling contractor for a price. He didn't
like what he heard and remarked, "I'll drill my own well for that!"
The contractor laughed at him; this was the wrong thing to do. He
was such a determined man he went out and bought his own drilling
rig a Keystone #3 cable tool. When the local drilling contractor
heard James
purchased the rig, he came over and showed him how to run it. The
business was born and he began drilling wells as James Carson Artesian
Well Drilling with his wooden Keystone #3 mounted on a primitive
handmade wagon equipped with iron wheels. This cable tool
drill machine was later updated and mounted on a truck and continued
to be an essential piece of equipment up to the start of World War
II. James's son, William started helping him at the age of 14 and
son, Raymond followed shortly after. The two sons learned the business
from their Father at a young age and eventually joined him in the
business with the name changing to James Carson and Sons Well Drilling.
James
Carson retired in the 50's with William and Raymond continuing the
business. Their Keystone #3 was replaced with a Keystone 50 cable
tool rig in the early 50's. Drilling a well with the cable tool
rig was a laborious process and sometimes would take a week or longer
to drill a well.
After the passing
of their Father, the company name was changed to Carson Brothers.
In the early years, the business focused on drilling of domestic
wells
but as the years went on the business was expanded from drilling
to include complete water well system installations from the well
into the house. Technology was changing and rotary rigs were becoming
popular as a more efficient and much faster way of drilling. William
and Raymond purchased their first rotary drill machine in l964 a
Schram T64HB. William's son, William Jr. was the next to start dabbling
in the business during the summer months when he was off from school
at the age of 14. William Jr. has been associated with the business
ever since and took control after the retirement of his Father and
Uncle in 1993. Raymond is now deceased and William Sr. is fully
retired. In 1999 the business changed it's name to Carson Water
Well Specialists to reflect the many aspects of well services that
we offer. Carson Water Well is currently running an Ingersoll Rand
T4 air rotary drill rig.
